A Buyer’s Guide to the Best Hallway Flooring

The ideal hallway is both beautiful and hard-wearing given the amount of traffic this area sees. There are many solutions available when it comes to flooring. Colour and design can make your hallway look larger and brighter and disguise signs of wear, so it is important to choose the right materials.

Tiles are a popular choice for hallways, but natural stone floors may not suit areas of heavy footfall. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are very durable, while encaustic tiles supply period style. Busy patterns allow you to go for longer in between cleans.

Mid-toned wooden finishes are forgiving at showing up dust, while light wood is more demanding but opens up spaces beautifully. Parquet floors should be shown off.

Engineered Wood

Engineered wood is often used instead of solid wood for hallways. Comprising several layers, composite or engineered wood is more stable than solid wood when it comes to alterations in humidity. Repairs can easily be made.

Laminate Flooring

For those on a budget, cheaper laminate hallway flooring mimics the look of engineered or solid wood. Good laminate flooring weathers wear and tear – avoid the cheapest options, which degrade quicker.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring can give the impression of parquet, wooden boards, patterned tiles or stone depending on your preference. It’s quiet underfoot, so noise is less of an issue. Easy to clean and cost-conscious, it can be adapted to unusually shaped hallways and may work well with underfloor heating.

Carpet

Warm and soft carpet is the go-to flooring choice for many. It can’t be mopped, but many carpets are resistant to dirt and hard-wearing. Wool-rich versions are luxuriant, while those with polyamide repel moisture and grease. Carpet also has the benefit of dampening noise. Visually, patterns such as stripes can jazz up your hallway.

Natural Flooring

Natural flooring made from plant fibres has textures that look attractive in your hallway. Sisal and coir are durable when it comes to hallway traffic – coir has golden shades, while the colour of sisal varies.

For a smart look, use runners – stripes will appear to lengthen your hallway if it is small. Harmonise with your stairs for a cohesive look.
