Copper pipe leaks, like any leaks, can be both damaging and inconvenient. So, if you notice that you have one, how should you deal with it?
Locate the leak and assess its severity
If you have noticed signs of a leak in your copper pipes, the first thing to do is locate it and assess how serious/large it is.
The simplest way to locate a leak is via a visual inspection. Other methods include feeling for moisture, listening for drips, using an infrared camera, using a dye test, or using an acoustic leak detector.
Once you have located the leak, you can make a judgement about its severity, and decide if it is feasible for you to attempt to repair it yourself. If you do not feel confident about attempting to fix it yourself, then you should contact a professional who will be able to do it for you.
Connecting copper pipe
Sometimes, when installing a plumbing system, there is a need to join copper pipes together. In some instances, specialist copper pipe connectors and fittings are needed. There are a number of firms in the UK who specialise in these. Many of these companies, such as Watkins and Powis and others, can offer advice as well as specialist products.
Quick fixes
If you feel confident that you can fix the leak, there are three options available.
- Using epoxy putty is a quick solution that is fairly easy and effective for leaks in places that are tricky to access.
- Using rubber and a clamp to cover the leak is an excellent temporary option for urgent situations – and this can also be done even if the water supply remains on.
- If you have been able to run off the water supply, have easy access to the pipe, and possess basic DIY skills, then opting to replace a section of the pipe using compression is a good choice and should fix the problem for a reasonable length of time.
Whichever method you choose, make sure that you wear the necessary protective equipment.
