The Bone Health Trio: Vitamin K2, Magnesium and Calcium

A typical bone-related nutrient, calcium usually gets all the attention. However, calcium alone isn’t enough. It takes calcium, magnesium and vitamin K2 working together to preserve your bones as healthy. This trio works together in different ways, and when you understand that dynamic, your bone care approach is revolutionised.

Calcium: The Building Block

Bone tissue consists mainly of the mineral calcium, which imparts structure and strength. Think of bone as a cellular calcium reservoir.

Did you know your bones can act like a big stash for storing up to 99% of the calcium in our whole body. There is no denying, calcium is crucial for bone health but simply consuming more of it doesn’t mean stronger bones. For calcium to go where it is supposed to – in your bones – it has to have the right supporting nutrients. On its own without these necessary brothers and sisters, the diva of minerals can easily end up in places you don’t want it – like lining your coronary arteries instead of packing away safely into bone tissue.

Magnesium: The Facilitator

Magnesium is calcium’s essential partner. It controls calcium movement and also helps to convert vitamin D2 to its active state that is required for the absorption of calcium. About 60% is stored in bone, where it contributes to structural integrity and bone density.

It also stops calcium from ending up deposited into the soft tissues. However when there is insufficient magnesium available in the body, that excess calcium can be sequestered away improperly into locations like kidneys and arteries where it causes harm rather than good. The ideal relationship between calcium and magnesium is approximately 2:1.

Vitamin K2: The Director

This is where Vitamin K2 becomes important. Calcium is meant to go into your bones and teeth, not in your arteries or soft tissues so when you take calcium without enough K2 (another drastic deficiency in our modern diet) – that calcium goes places where it does not belong! K2 is like the traffic cop of calcium, it directs to where your body determines that it needs to go.

Research shows that supplementing with K2 leads to a vast improvement in bone density and helps reduce the risk of fractures. For a Vitamin K2 Supplement, contact https://www.vitortho.co.uk/supplements/categories/a-z-all-supplements/vitamin-k2-200mcg-mk7/

The Synergistic Effect

These three compounds act synergistically, which means their effect together is more powerful than the sum of their effectiveness individually. Calcium supplies the groundwork, magnesium provides its passage and metabolism, while K2 transports it to appropriate places.

Getting the Balance Right

Include calcium in your diet by having dairy, leafy greens and fortified products. Eat magnesium-rich foods like nuts, seeds, whole grains and dark chocolate. Have vitamin K2 via fermented foods, grass-fed dairy, and egg yolks.
