Is Caffeine Good for the Body?

Caffeine is both good and bad for the body. It brings positive and negative effects. Consume just the right amount so negative effects can be outweighed by the positive ones. Increase in mental and physical alertness are just some of the health benefits that caffeine can provide to the body. According to some studies, the regular consumption of caffeine is also said to lessen the risk of liver cirrhosis, colon cancer, Parkinson’s disease and gallstone formation in men. A research also shows that it helps in enhancing the performance of athletes when taken two hours before activity.

Caffeine: Myths or Facts?

Tea leaves, cocoa beans and coffee are just some of the most common sources of caffeine. Cold medicines, diet pills, over the counter pain killers, energy drinks and some beverages also contain an amount of caffeine. Consuming caffeine at the right amount can help in relieving headaches and uplift a person’s mood.

Caffeine content differs from food to food, the serving size and how the food or beverage is prepared. They said that caffeine is addictive and regular consumption of this will cause mild physical dependence. A lot of people regularly consume caffeine because of its stimulant effect that is acting on the central nervous system, causing an uplifting and energetic feeling. Unlike other addictive substances or drugs, the presence of caffeine in the body does not impend a person’s social and physical health.

Caffeine may cause insomnia. Consuming it late in the afternoon or at night can interfere with an individual’s sleeping pattern but sleep won’t be troubled if caffeine is consumed in the morning or at least 6 to 8 hours before going to bed.

Caffeine Withdrawal Symptoms

Most people have their first cup of coffee in the morning. Some can have two cups or more of coffee in a day. Aside from coffee, there are also lots of other caffeine sources. Abruptly stopping the consumption of caffeine may cause withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, tired feeling, headache, depressive mood and lack of concentration.

Dependence on caffeine is not considered as a serious addiction unlike the use of alcohol and other prohibited drugs. It does not cause severe withdrawal symptoms that affect one’s actions and way of thinking.

Caffeine Health Effects

In some cases, caffeine causes insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, rapid heartbeat and nervousness but if consumed at the right amount, it brings health benefits. To stay away from the negative effects of caffeine and maximize only the positive ones and gain its benefits, do not take caffeine in excessive amounts. The key is to consume caffeine in moderation.

Caffeine has a mild stimulant effect and many people have found drinking beverages or taking foods or substances containing caffeine as a great way to start their day.
