Do you want to know in which architectural style your house has been built? It may be interesting info to help understand your property’s design heritage but in some cases this insight is vital and can press renovation decisions forward. When you need a Monmouth Architect, visit https://www.hillsandcompany.co.uk/

Victorian Homes (1837-1901)

Keep an eye out for elaborate elements, bay windows and ornamental wood work. They tend to have steep, gabled roofs and irregular facades with gingerbread decoration. Craft and decoration were all-important.

Edwardian Properties (1901-1910)

Slightly less fancy and more practical than Victorian, Edwardian houses often have bigger windows and wider hallways but are still charming. Included in such terms are false Tudor architecture and brick veneer, respectively.

Art Deco (1920s-1930s)

With geometric shapes, rounded corners and a sleek design. Flat roofs, horizontal lines and unusual rounded bay windows are some of the features that give these homes a modern twist.

Post-War Modern (1950s-1960s)

Another characteristic of this period is the clean lines, wide windows and open-plan living. Located in urban environments, which have limited usable space available for the construction of homes and properties that are designed to accommodate much more than a standard home!

Contemporary Styles

Sustainable materials, energy efficiency and flexible spaces combine to create new homes that aren’t so reliant on traditional style cues.

Why It Matters

Understanding the style at work in your house helps you make sympathetic modifications that accentuate rather than diminish other aspects of character. Your original charm is probably very valuable and thinking about what makes your home special before making changes is paramount.

Spend time in county records or get to know some of the older neighbours who have lived there for longer. The architectural story of your home is part of the heritage of your neighbourhood.
