How to Store Valve Stock Properly

Valves are sensitive items and if they are not stored correctly then they can suffer damage which could be as bad as being subjected to hard use. The storage of valves is a relatively simple matter and the following points should be noted.

Control Temperature and Humidity

Some stockrooms have temperature and humidity controls but a simple dehumidifier can be sufficient to control the atmosphere. Under normal circumstances, stocks are usually stored in a covered outdoor area and are protected from the elements.

Store Valves in the Correct Position

When storing valves, they should ideally be stored in a closed position to stop any dust entering the valve and to stop any distortion to the valve body or seats. Some specialist valves will need to be stored in an open position to stop the packing from being compressed. These need to be checked against the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure that they are stored correctly to ensure that they do not leak from the first time they are used.

Cap Threads and Flange Faces

The end connections of threaded body valves and flanged valves need protecting against accidental damage, as well as against corrosion. Plastic end caps or blank flanges can be used to cover end connections on stored valves.

Use Proper Racking

Try not to stack valves on top of each other, they can crack, distort or even break the actuator. Store on adjustable metal shelving or racking, ensure that heavier items are on lower shelves and leave plenty of space between items. Safe storage of industrial components is described in the HSE guidance.

Label and Rotate Valve Stock

Use a first-in first-out system. Ensure all valves are labelled with receipt date, nominal size, and pressure rating. Simple tags or a bin card system work well to highlight the oldest items stored in the rack.

If stored correctly, your valves will remain a fit for purpose for when you need them.
